FeeTeardown · sample report
One month of card and ACH fees, explained
A fee report built from an Adyen Payment Accounting Report. It shows who gets paid at each step, which card types cost the most, and where a change would save money.
Illustrative data. A made-up U.S. merchant with 4,000 settled payments, generated in the same column layout the report uses. Rates and program names are invented for this sample and are not Adyen's pricing or any merchant's real figures.
- Volume settled
- $684,008
- Fees on settled payments
- $16,8982.47% of volume
- Gateway fees, separate
- $4804,000 × $0.12, in their own currency column
Where each $100 goes
Of every $100 processed, $2.47 goes to fees. Most of it is interchange, which Adyen passes on to the card issuer.
- Interchange (card issuer)$1.7269%
- Scheme fees (Visa, Mastercard)$0.135%
- Adyen markup and commission$0.6225%
What each payment type costs, all-in
Fees as a share of the amount paid, by payment method variant. The two commercial card types cost about four times what ACH does.
The commercial card gap
Commercial cards are 8% of payments (323 of 4,000) but 37% of volume and 46% of all fees. Inside them, the report shows two different interchange programs.
| Interchange program | Payments | Volume | Interchange rate | All-in rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial Card Standard | 248 | $192,827 | 2.51% | 3.25% |
| Commercial Level 3 Data | 75 | $57,109 | 1.96% | 2.70% |
If the 248 standard payments had priced like the Level 3 ones, this month would have cost about $1,060 less, roughly $12,700 a year if the month is typical.
Level 3 pricing generally depends on sending detailed line-item data with the payment, and not every payment qualifies. The point of the report is to show which cards are paying the higher program, so you can check whether your integration is sending that data.
What the report checks on its own
- Every settled row adds up: amount captured, minus fees, equals the payable amount (4,000 of 4,000).
- The interchange amounts agree with the basis points in the ICSF details column.
- Fees repeated on a payment's earlier rows are counted once, and gateway fees are shown in their own currency instead of being added to the totals.
- Missing optional columns are named, with where to switch them on.
Table view of the first chart
| Component | Per $100 | Total this month |
|---|---|---|
| Interchange | $1.72 | $11,738 |
| Scheme fees | $0.13 | $902 |
| Adyen markup and commission | $0.62 | $4,257 |
| Total | $2.47 | $16,898 |
What I need to run this on your data
- One full month of the Payment Accounting Report.
- These optional columns switched on in the Customer Area report settings: Funding Source, Issuer Country, Global Card Brand and ICSF details.
- User name, shopper details and card number removed before sending. The report doesn't use them.
